Rinkside is here!

Today's the day! Rinkside is officially available on Amazon in paperback, ebook, and on Kindle Unlimited.

Rinkside is my first published novella, a story that fits neatly into the timeline of The B-Boy. The fun thing is you could read either one first and still catch everything that's happening. Of course, if you haven't read Knockout Girl and Standup Guy yet, I recommend starting there. Because, you know, spoilers.

So, what's it all about? After graduating from high school, Cherry's plan is simple - work at her parents' arena for the summer and then go to school for business in the fall. Everything is set.

That is, until she meets Richie.

The young, attractive nephew of the arena's former Zamboni driver, Richie turns Cherry's world upside down from the moment they meet. Not only does he question her decision to study business, but he also makes her rethink her decision to stay close to home.

If only Gary hadn't gotten sick, if only Richie had never filled in as the Zamboni driver, if only he hadn't admitted he's never left Ontario, if only he hadn't touched Cherry's tattoo...

Maybe then, things would have stayed perfectly on track. But life is never that clean cut, and Cherry's about to find out that plans and fate can coincide if she's willing to let them.

There we have it! I'm super excited for you guys to read Rinkside and tell me what you think on any of the following platforms:

Or you can drop me a comment on this blog post! Also, if you really enjoy my blog posts as much as I enjoy writing them, feel free to subscribe to them! You'll get my posts straight to your email, so if that sounds like something you'd interested in, enter your email address in the box on the right that says "Subscribe to my blog!"

The B-Boy is here!

Hey, folks, guess what? The B-Boy is officially available on Amazon in paperback, ebook, and on Kindle Unlimited! I'm so excited for this one because I wrote it last November during NaNoWriMo and I've been working with it since then, eagerly awaiting its release day.

Red's story was one that deserved to be told and Zara was the perfect person to help him tell it. I can't wait for you to read it and enjoy it. Here's a little blurb:
Now that high school's over and he's left his life as a bully behind, Red finally has time to focus on what he wants: boxing. For as long as he's able, that's what he'll do.
Zara's passion for dancing is rivaled by none, but her dreams are shattered when her dance partner sprains his ankle weeks before their showcase. With no other options, Red's cousin and Zara's best friend suggests they team up.
Now Red has a tough decision to make: stick to what he's always known or find the courage to love something new?
The B-Boy is avaible here. And we can't forget about Cherry! Rinkside is still on pre-order here and will be available in just one week!

Happy reading!

The B-Boy book trailer!

For the first time ever, I've released a book trailer for The B-Boy!! I've posted it on pretty much all my socials, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, but for your viewing pleasure, I've also embedded it below.

As with most things in my self-publishing career, I had a lot of help making this video. Specifically from the super-duper talented Joel Wright - musician, songwriter, and movie music mastermind. Thanks so much for the catchy tune that really makes my trailer pop!

You can now pre-order The B-Boy here. You can also now pre-order its companion novella, Rinkside here.

Happy reading!!

My Best Friend's Brother/The Summer I Turned Into A Girl - Excerpt

I have been asked in the past to post an excerpt of MBFB and with its recent release as an ebook, I've decided to do just that. I had a hard time picking the part I thought best represented the book without giving too much away, but I hope this'll do the trick.

That night, Jess and Colin met and worked separately on their “homework.” Jess gave Colin an entirely new list of moves to practice over and over, while Colin set up some markers for Jess to practice her kicking aim.

“I don’t know how you do all this,” Colin commented as he twisted Jess’ body into shapes he’d never known existed before.

“Do what?” Jess asked as she lined up some soccer balls.

“All of it,” Colin said. “I mean, I’m exhausted from all of the rehearsals and pretending to be happy and perky with your friends.”

“I don’t have to pretend to be happy for my friends,” Jess said calmly, kicking the first ball and missing the target by a lot.

“You have to keep your leg directed at where you want the ball to go,” Colin pointed out.

“Yeah, yeah. Work on your forms,” Jess said, her voice edging on frustration.

Colin went back to the list of moves Jess gave him. Some of them were stand-alone while other ones melded into new ones. It was the transitions that he had the most problem with. Sometimes he just didn’t know when to move into a new form or really how he should look when he did. Now he understood why there were mirrors all over the dance studio.

Colin was so focused on what he was doing that he was startled when Jess grabbed him around the waist from behind and started guiding his movements. Colin tensed up but Jess didn’t seem to notice.

“See, it’s like this,” Jess said. “Just sway your hips to the right, extend your left arm.” When Colin didn’t move, she repeated, “Extend your left arm.”

Colin cleared his throat nervously and did as Jess instructed. What was wrong with him? Jess was like right behind him, practically breathing in his ear and he just couldn’t handle it. He turned around and took a couple steps back.

“Colin, what’s wrong?” Jess asked innocently.

“N-nothing,” Colin stammered. “Just keep your hands to yourself, okay?”

Jess narrowed her eyes at Colin and then she burst out laughing. “Are you embarrassed or something? I was only trying to help you.”

“Yeah, okay, it’s fine,” Colin said. “Go practice.”

Jess gave him one last smirk and then went back to kicking soccer balls. She didn’t know what had Colin all riled up, but she had a pretty good feeling he wouldn’t tell her anyway. She only half-concentrated on what she was doing because she kept looking back at Colin to see how he was doing. And she had to admit – he didn’t look too bad. He just lacked the knowledge. She had no idea how she would ever get him to memorize all of the dances by Friday.

Colin knew Jess was watching him, but he decided not to let on. He wanted to ignore her but after the way she’d held onto him and moved his hips that way, he was keenly aware of her presence. He hadn’t wanted to admit to her that he’d liked being touched, because it would just make their already awkward predicament even more complicated. Plus it just felt weird.

“Ian told me he was going to ask Cass out,” Jess said after they’d been practicing silently for a long time.

“Um, yeah,” Colin said. “Actually, he already did.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah, she told me he did it at the mall today.”

“How do you feel about it?” Jess asked.

“I didn’t really get a chance to say anything to her,” Colin said. “It was kind of a quick mention before she went home with you and I haven’t seen her since.”

“That’s not really an answer to the question,” Jess commented.

“I don’t really like it,” Colin said, trying to keep the emotion out of his voice. “But I didn’t know how to tell her without sounding like…me.”

“Do you…” Jess paused. “Do you want me to talk to her? For you?”

Colin dropped the stance he’d been trying to perfect and turned to look at her. She had also stopped kicking to watch him. “You would do that?” Colin asked.

“If you want me to,” Jess said. “I mean, she is my best friend, and you know Ian better than me. I could give her a little warning, I guess.”

“You really have no qualms about meddling in her business?” Colin asked uncertainly.

“I’m already lying to her, remember?” Jess turned back to the soccer balls.

“Hey, pass me one of those,” Colin said, nodding at the other balls on the ground. Jess leaned over to pick one up, but Colin said, “No, not like that. Never touch a soccer ball with your hands.”

“Sorry,” Jess muttered. She haphazardly kicked the soccer ball in Colin’s general direction but it went wide by about two feet.

Colin lifted an eyebrow at her. “Did you even think about that before you did it?”

Jess shrugged. “What’s there to think about?”

Colin shook his head. “I know you think jocks are stupid and stuff, but there are a lot more cognitive skills involved in sports than you probably think.”

“Okay, the fact that you used the word ‘cognitive’ has my attention,” Jess said. “So educate me.”

“You can’t just kick something and expect it to read your mind,” Colin said. “I mean, it would have even helped if you were looking at me while you did it, but you weren’t.”

“Yes I–”

“You weren’t,” Colin said. “You can’t lie to me; I know what I look like when I lie.”

“Okay, okay,” Jess said. “So, I have to look at you. Fair enough.”

“And there’s a lot of angling involved. Ever play pool?” Jess shook her head and Colin added, “That’s okay. My point is that every time you kick the ball, you literally have to make sure you leg follows through in the exact direction that you wanted the ball to go. If not, you’re doing it wrong.”

“Okay…” Jess said slowly.

She went over to the next ball, lined it up exactly where she wanted it and then kicked it in Colin’s direction. She had so much follow through that she actually kicked her leg right out and fell backward on her butt. Colin laughed out loud at her, and she lifted her head to glare at him.

“I’m sorry,” Colin said, laughter still in his voice. “But look! You got the ball right to me.”

“I did?” Jess asked, sitting up.

“Yup.” Colin grinned.

“Woohoo.” Jess smiled back at him.

Let's hear it for the B team!

Just wanted to post a little update...

I know tons of people are always wondering "What's Natasja up to these days?" (Okay, I know that doesn't really happen, but when you're a creative fiction writer, you can imagine just about any old thing that pops into your head.)

Anyway, lately I'm been doing a lot of beta reading for other unpublished authors, which is actually a very interesting and rewarding experience. Funny enough, it gives you a pretty good idea where you sit on the quality scale. There are some authors out there that I would say have some work to do before they get to my level, but there are certainly a lot that are way better than me. It's a learning experience and the more I do, the more aware I am of how I write and how to better myself.

By the same token, I've been having a few of my novels beta read as well which is... well also interesting and rewarding, but it's hard. I know, it doesn't sound like it's hard to just have someone read what you've written but trust me, it is. When you love something as much as I love my books, it's sometimes hard to hear any negative thing about them. On the other hand, it's also twice as rewarding to hear good things about them.

So between the beta reading, the editing, and trying desperately to finish writing a book, I haven't had a lot of time for my blog. But I'm still here and it's still here and I'll update it when I have time for it I guess.

Interested in all this beta reading jazz? Hit me up!

Less Than Perfect preview

Hi all!

You may remember me talking in the past about a book I have called Less Than Perfect. I wrote this book a good seven years ago and my writing has a evolved a lot. However, I've decided to let people read it, so I've started uploading it to Wattpad. You can find it here.

I will try to upload at least a chapter a week (unless it becomes more popular or something). So please do check it out.

While you're on Wattpad, check out my friend's book, Sold to a Wolf Pack. (Werewolves but no vampires.)

Happy reading!

Me, Myself, And All The Other People In My Head

A post about character creation and how good characters will take over an entire project.

First off, let me just say that I do not "base my characters on people I know." To do so would inevitably land me in a great deal of trouble, especially if I kill the character you thought was written after you. If a character happens to share a certain trait with you, this is either coincidence or I might just like that thing about you. This applies to everything I write, with the exception of two short stories I wrote for two very special people in my life.

Now that I've finished my disclaimer, I can say that, yes, of course you're in my stories! Because you're a part of me, and I'm a part of each and every one of my characters. In order for you to properly enjoy a book, the characters have to feel like real people. Which means they have to have real emotions, reactions, traits, mannerisms, etc. And who better to base those things on than you?

Anyone who knows me and my writing knows that I don't write books. I write characters who happen to do interesting things. Almost all of my stories have started with at least a couple characters with interesting personalities and histories. Sometimes they become so realistic that they start doing things on their own and the next thing I know, I'm in the middle of a plot without a paddle!

If you love a good character-based story and have a little extra time on your hands, I'm now in the midst of having Knockout Girl beta read and you are welcome to do so as well. Just click here to let me know!

Hello and Other Things

As you can see from my last blog post, two years ago I joined nanowrimo. I did actually win in 2015, then in 2016, and again this year. I've had a few questions about what I've been writing the last couple of years and the answer is:

The Onepian Chronicles

I call the genre of this series "light sci-fi," or a space soap if you will, because it centres around real human beings doing real things, except they have space ships, live on different planets, and it's set far into the future. It's a little like Star Trek, but without alien races and a little less technical. Each book focuses on the story of a new set of characters that have been previously introduced, so they read well as stand-alones but are part of a bigger overall story arch. The series is nowhere near ready to be published (or even read by people who don't love me unconditionally). I mean, one of the books isn't even finished and two or them don't have titles. (Contact me if you want to take a crack at that.)

Other than that, I've been working on perfecting another young adult novel called Knockout Girl. This book is very dear to me as it's one of my favourite books I've ever written. Elli, the first person narrator, is witty and sarcastic and at least half-full of teenage angst. But she's got a good heart and genuinely wants to see her friends succeed. Currently Knockout Girl is going through some rounds of beta reading and last touches, after which I plan on self-publishing again.

Of course, none of this is possible without the help and support of my amazing friends! Writing a manuscript is one thing. But having it edited and read over and over again and then publishing it requires a lot of work and is hard to do with a small group of people, let alone by yourself. So just know that I appreciate each and everyone one of you lovely people.

Write, Write, Write!

Okay, so I've been back to work for two weeks now, which - as you can imagine - has left me with very little time for myself. I was also busy preparing for my one-year-old's birthday party (I just had to mention that). However, I have been keeping up my writing and I promise that my new super short story series is coming soon! (Ish. Soon-ish.)

However, I've been writing something lately that I have no intention of letting anyone else read. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but just that I've been rediscovering the meaning of the phrase "write for yourself." Trust me on this - writing something you know no one but yourself will read is one of the most freeing exercises you can try. And it's completely motivating. Much like during nanowrimo, I barely read back, I don't edit, and sometimes I write complete nonsense. But you know what? That's not a bad thing. In fact, it's rather cathartic in a way.

So that's what I've been up to (other than helping a certain little man learn to walk on his own). Again, new stuff to read is coming very very very soon!

Knockout Girl

I've spoken a lot in the past about a book I have called Less Than Perfect. It's a book I wrote a few years ago that I hope to one day have published (either traditionally or self-published). However, I've been rethinking it and reworking it and it's just not ready to go anywhere yet. But that's okay! I have plenty of other books and today's post is actually about one of those.

Knockout Girl is a new young adult novel that I finished writing a few months ago. It's about a girl named Elli who is forced to move from Hawaii to Toronto in the dead of winter. Although she's rather resistant at first, she makes friends with Julian, who she discovers is being used as a punching bag for the school's boxing champion, Red. Elli quickly realizes the only way to get this guy off her friend's back is to beat him at his own game. With the help of a cute jock, a sweet tattooed loner, and Elli's burnt out boxing champion uncle, she and Julian enter a boxing tournament where Julian will have to face his bully in the ultimate showdown.

Why I love this story so much is because, for starters, Elli is hilarious. She's moody, sassy, and generally unhappy with her life, which somehow comes across in the funniest of ways. Once she learns that living in Canada is not the end of the world, however, she becomes a pretty good friend to Julian. (Just friends.) Julian is a perfect counter-part to Elli's narration - he's calm, cool, and collected. He's smart and and a self-admitted loner. But he's also compassionate to Elli's plight in having to be the new girl in school and in a new country.

This story isn't just about bullying or how two people learned how to beat someone up. It's a coming-of-age story about finding friendship in unlikely places and having courage in the face of adversity. I don't want to give away the ending,* but I will say that before Julian even fights Red, he's already won in the eyes of his peers.

So there it is! This story is already being sent around a little bit. With a few minor tweaks, it would be ready for publication. If I can't find a publisher or agent who wants to take it on, I'll do it myself, because I really believe in this book. (My mom says it's great, so obviously it is.) No matter what, I'll see this manuscript turn into a book.

Where have you been?

When I came back to my blog today, I learned that the last time I posted was in August of 2013 - nearly 2 years ago! And why is that, you may ask. I have to be perfectly honest; around that time, I was going through a rut. I wallowed in self-pity over my lack of being able to write anything worth mentioning. I felt virtually useless in my craft. I couldn't pen a single thing. It was awful.

Soon after that, I got pregnant and I honestly didn't even have the stomach to sit in front of my screen and attempt Nanowrimo that year. I wanted to, but if you've ever experienced morning sickness, then I think you could forgive me for that. I was also busy working two jobs and preparing for the greatest change of my life.

I got back into the groove after my little guy was born and I'm proud to say that over the last year I finished writing 3 books, and started 2 new ones and 4 sequels. So, I haven't done that badly. And from now on, I won't neglect my blog either.

That's is for today! Anything you want to know, just ask. Interested in being a beta reader? Send me an email! Love you guys.

I'm not trying to hide... not too much, anyway.

Today's post is all about My Best Friend's Brother/The Summer I Turned Into A Girl and where exactly you can find this book. If you haven't yet had a chance to read it, there are places it can be found for free, my friends. And if you're still interested in buying it, there are also several places to do that.

1. I always have copies. If you live remotely close to me, you can get your hands on a copy from me. I will sell you copies (usually for a discounted price) and I will sign it. And if I'm feeling particularly generous, I may even just lend you a copy.*

2. My local library carries a couple copies of it. Library cards are free, and so is borrowing books.

3. Various friends and family members have copies of my books, so if you are friends with them, just ASK. If they don't have a copy on hand, they can still get you a copy from me. Keep in mind that I have friends and family near where I live, and in various parts of the States.

4. I think some people in the UK bought my book. I don't actually know who, but it's kind of cool to know it's traveled that far.

If all that fails, there's the online stuff:
5. The CreateSpace store has it, of course.

6. Amazon.com is currently offering it at a discounted price.**

7. Lastly, please keep in mind that my book is on Goodreads. If you've read it and know someone else who has read it, could you kindly take the time to rate and/or review it? Thank you so much.

- Natasja

*I also have a copy in my bathroom, so feel free to come over and... I don't know, use the bathroom?

**Do me a favour, would you? If you see some clowns trying to sell my book for $145.27, please let me know. Thanks.

"Some Cupid kills with arrows, some with traps"

Good old William Shakespeare once wrote that in a play called "Much Ado About Nothing." The play, which could almost be called a Shakespearean version of a sitcom, isn't quite about nothing. Without giving too much away, basically there's a young couple who fall in love and another couple who are most definitely in love though they deny it thoroughly and are always at each other's throats. The young man gets some intentionally misleading information about the girl he's just fallen in love with, and he publicly slanders her and ruins her reputation on the day of their wedding. You should really read the play, but if you're not that into Shakespeare, Kenneth Branagh did an excellent job of adapting this into a movie. (I also read that Joss Whedon has a version that just came out.)

Why am I telling you about this? Because, folks, I've decided to rewrite this play for my NaNoWriMo project this year. I first fell in love with this play when I was a lot younger and I watched the movie with my parents. Though I didn't quite understand all of it (the lines are exactly as old Billy wrote them), I still couldn't help loving the characters and their plights. I've seen the movie quite a few times and read the play a couple times, and I am really excited to try to write a new version of it.

Yes, I know some of you may be groaning on the inside because you're sick of seeing old classics retold over and over. But - and excuse me for being a little hipster - this isn't Pride and Prejudice or Romeo and Juliet, it's not quite as well known and certainly not as retold. And maybe some of you are thinking that I'm cheating by using someone else's story. But I can guarantee it'll be just as hard to modernize this story as it would be to write an entirely new one. Plus, I don't think Billy will mind.

So there you have it. That is the entirety of what I'll be working on this November. Also, for those of you who would actually like to read the story while I'm writing it, Smashwords has graciously allowed us writers to use their services to show people our progress. So after I've been onto the site, I'll be posting a link to it so you can read along. I have to warn you now - when I write a rough draft, I really do mean that it's rough. So don't judge me, but I will take some constructive criticism along the way. Especially if you happen to notice I'm missing any words!

Bits and Pieces

Just a few quick things to keep my faithful readers updated...

I had been fretting over what I should write for nanowrimo, which as you may know is now just five days away! Yes, November was creeping up on me, and with thoughts of my birthday and American Thanksgiving in my mind, I had no idea what my next book would be about. I think the problem was that I already have so many stories in the works that I didn't know where my next idea would come from. Someone even suggested that I take a story that I had barely started and run with that, but that felt dishonest somehow, now matter how few words had already been written. But I'm happy to say that I've finally come up with something decent to write. Now all I have to do is wait until next Thursday and start writing like a maniac.*

I feel sick, like I have a cold or "allergies" as my sister said it might be. And does anyone know what it's like to work two jobs when they're sick? And never have time for things like making actual meals, and buying new clothes, and writing The Best Best-Seller Ever? I'm quite aware that these are rather first-world problems, but sometimes I feel like I should share my misery. Don't worry - all the light, fun, fluffiness of my books will still exist in its own realm.

Things you can do if there is a lack of updates on my blog:
1) Buy my book and read it a few times.
2) Follow me on twitter @natasjaeby
3) Become of fan of my Goodreads author page
4) Start planning for your own nanowrimo challenge!

Query Me

The hardest thing I've ever had to write (other than essays on books that I was never going to finish anyway) is a query letter. Query letters must be the bane of every aspiring author's existence, especially if it's the first time they're trying it out. I've written quite a few queries, all for the same book, and while they're all different, I do think that I'm getting better at them.

Let me tell you why query/cover letters are a fiction writer's nightmare, at least in my opinion: because fiction writers write fiction. Personally, I hate having to write about myself, about why I think my book is amazing and better than anything else out there. Not because I don't think it's amazing, but because it feels like I'm writing a heavily veiled "LOVE ME" letter to a editor I've never met before. I might as well be begging for publication for all the good it does.

The worst part of this is that I put so much work, effort, and time into writing both my cover letter and of course into the manuscript I'd like published. And generally, they go into a slush pile (read: recycling). And yes, I am aware that J. K. Rowling was rejected a million times or whatever, as were a bunch of other famous authors, and I'm sure they have binders full of rejection letters. But just because those authors have "interesting" stories about finally getting published doesn't change the fact that there could be countless other brilliant authors who didn't get published.

People say that the query/cover letter should be when you really shine by saying how good your book is, how well it fits into the market, and how good of an author you are. That it should reflect your style of writing while maintaining professionalism, and should really showcase your best work. And this is exactly what makes them so difficult. You can't just let your writing "speak for itself," you have to actually talk about it too. It's awkward, it's not easy to do, and it's a totally undervalued skill.

Which is why I'm currently working on perfecting it. Because, as cheesy as it sounds, I really would like to shine.

News - The Challenge

A few weeks ago, I wrote about my NaNoWriMo experience from last November. I remember very distinctly saying that it was such a good idea, and that I think everyone should try it once, and maybe I even added that I was a glutton for punishment...

Well, I just wanted to make the official announcement that I would be entering again this year. That's right - I, Natasja Eby, am going to attempt to write another 50,000-word novel in just 30 days. Even though this year, I'm working two jobs, and I don't have nearly as much time. (So, apologies in advance to my bosses, as I may end up doing a lot of writing while I'm... "working.")

Why am I doing it? Mostly because a coworker of mine, who happens to be the Municipal Liaison for my area, basically convinced me that I should do it. Partly because I've had other encouragement. And lastly because... well, to be honest, last time, it ended up in me publishing my first novel. So I can't say it wasn't a good experience.

So, now all I have to do is decide what I want to write and wait for November 1st. Friends, Family, loved ones... I'm sorry, but I'm pretty much going to be out of commission this November. Don't be offended if my laptop spends more quality time with me than you do.

You know I love you anyways.
